What is the difference between an electric bicycle and an ordinary one?
The obvious and main difference between an ordinary and an electric bicycle is the presence of two additional elements: an electric motor and a battery . The engine is in charge of generating energy, through the cyclist's pedaling, while the battery is in charge of storing the created energy.
There are two types of engines, which differ depending on the propulsion offered:
· Assisted Pedal: also called Pedelec , are the bikes whose motor activates the propulsion mode as the pedaling rate drops, providing an additional boost. Thus, to use acceleration, the cyclist must continue pedaling ;
· Accelerator: they are more complete engines, which provide propulsion without the need to pedal. Thus, with a charged battery, the cyclist can control the acceleration on the handle, and save his breath.
Brazilian law defines, through Resolution No. 465/2013 of Contran (PDF), that an electric bicycle with Pedelec must have a battery of up to 350 W , and cannot exceed the maximum speed of 25 km / h , to be exempt from the collections of IPVA and Mandatory Insurance ( DPVAT ).
Those with an accelerator are classified as mopeds , requiring a driver's category A driver's license, license plate and tax collection.
How to choose the best electric bike?
First of all, you need to define what your particular needs are . Nowadays, many look for a bike of the type to make the daily commute between home and work, but it is important to consider the distance to be covered, and the average time you will take from point A to point B. As healthy as cycling be, covering 80 km every day, for example, can be very tiring.
Next, you must choose the type of bicycle you want to use. As already explained, Pedelec do not require a CNH or license plate, and are the cheapest options for most users. If you do not want additional costs, this is the best option.
On the battery , there are the lead-acid models , which are cheaper, but heavier, with a shorter service life and which take longer to charge, and those of lithium ions (such as cell phones, faster, lighter and that last longer, but that are much more expensive). Is converting an ordinary bicycle to an electric one worth it?
Many people tend to consider conversion , turning a regular bicycle into an electric one a better option than buying a ready-made one, but there are points that need to be taken into account. In general, conversion kits approved by Contran cost between R $ 1,499 and R $ 2,999 in Brazil and, in addition to being expensive, can turn the bike into a moped, starting to require driver's license, registration and tax collection.
